Today Anna went for a meeting because of the home for orphanage home which one of the groups of women are working on. The meeting was successful and representatives of the municipality and school were very thankful for the initiative. After luch there was an open session with computers and handcraft.
This morning we visited a primary school in the town of Daffa. We were looking at a possible housing for an orphanage. One of the ladies were with us but she had pointed out this empty house near the primary school. Anna presented the idea to the headmaster of the school and got very positive response. Tomorrow the women and Anna will meet with the town council and the headmaster.
After lunch the women continued working on finance and planning for their business. The women presented their planning and their vision for the next year. It was rewarding to hear that the course had be a bit hard for them and at the same time opened their mind and increased their self-esteem.
Duka a small grocery shop is a popular business idea with the women on the course this year and last year as well. You can see Duka everywhere a side the road and at people’s home. Specially women with young children se opportunity in having small Duka.
This morning we met up with two women from last year’s course. One of them has established a small Duka with around 25 product group’s such as soda, salt, rice, water and soap. The other girl is still saving up to be able to open her Duka.
After lunch the women worked with finance and planning for their business ideas. They had to find start up cost, monthly expenses and possible income.
Today was a day off which we used to visit Ngorongoro conservation area. We saw wild animals like lions, zebras, elephants, gnu, buffalos etc. all living together peacefully, at least when the lions are not hungry. We recommend everyone to visit this magnificent place which is one of UNESCO world heritage places.
Today we concentrated on handcraft. Hulda thought the women to knit, crochet and make batik. All were very enthusiastic about the handcraft and soon learned the basic steps.
We brought 4 computers with us from Iceland, which were gifts from companies, to give away. Most of the women had never touched a computer before. Today the learned to write in Word and format the letters. Some of the most engaged participants made basic steps in power point presentation with pictures.
Tomorrow we have a day off and intend to visit Ngorongor national park.
Last night it started to rain cats and dogs with the result we had to change the schedule. Around 11 a´clock it stopped raining and we walked down to the kindergarden. After luch time we used Bajadis wich was an unique experience in this conditions. Today 30 women paticipated in a group work where they discussed specialisation, priceing, competition and possible partners. In the end of the day the groups introduced their work loud and clear. It is rewarding to see their self esteem growing day by day.
On sunny Thursday we visited three women that have rented a small house for their tailor shop. They sew all kinds of clothing for their women, men and children. They are equipped with three food driven sewing machines. The good news is that they are making a small profit.
After lunch the new group met again and now they worked in small groups. As we had so many women showing up we had to get an extra translator. That was Akweline, a young woman who lives and works on TanzaNice Farm. Today’s assignment was to make the first definition of the product, promotion, price and place. The women did very well and some of them had even prepared for the class from home. The women were very enthusiastic and they even added new ideas, which they wanted to work on. One of the new ideas was to establish an orphanages.
On our way home we visited a young single mother with three children, two year old twins and a seven year old boy. We also visited one of the women that is attending our course. In Tanzania there is no welfare system that supports single mothers so they have to depend on their families and friends. Despite the hard circumstances, the women are hard working, brave and always smiling.
Today we met with two groups from last year, the soap group and the M-Pesa group. The main topic was talking about their obstacle’s and what would be the next step in their business.
In the afternoon we met the new group again. We were very pleased with how many women showed up today but they went from sixteen to 41.
Todays topic was more new business ideas the women can work with. They had to find their strength and the opportunities that lies in them. The women had many new ideas such as garage, women centre were they exchange ideas and help each other.
Today the seminar Women Power in Tanzania started with two groups, in the morning and afternoon. The seminar is held in Bashay near the school. The day started with a visit to the school where we met with the principal and the teachers. We showed them the video from the last year seminar and it look like they all enjoyed it.
